FABRIC FACE MASKS

DAVID JACKSON | FABRIC | APRIL 21, 2020

In these unique days, more and more people like Hannah Hollingsworth (shown above) are making and using homemade face masks. Marshall Dry Goods has found that many of our competitors are NOT shipping fabric at this time. We are! We have tons of ideas and yards of fabric to make your face mask dreams come true!

With our doctors, nurses, hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare providers running low of face masks, we can do our part and make our own! Face masks do not require a lot of material, and take little time to make.

As a side note: Marshall Dry Goods recommends you do your own research, as some mask designs and fabrics do not necessarily meet some standards. We are not medical professionals and we ask that you make your masks based on knowledge you can glean.

DO FACE MASKS CUT THE MUSTARD?

According to the CDC, “In settings where facemasks are not available, individuals might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.”

While a fabric mask may help prevent the spread of droplets, it is not completely effective against all viruses. Marshall Dry Goods recommend you wash and sterilize your face mask before and after each use. If it becomes damp, wash and sterilize it again.

WHAT FABRICS TO USE

The most popular opinions say that using 100% cotton material  is the most commonly used fabric to make masks. We have yards of quilting cotton - which is a great option to use - in a variety of prints and colors. It is suggested that you use one print for the front of the face mask, and a different print for the back side. This will enable the wearer to identify which side is facing the public. Some advise using a liner or a filter in the mask as well.

WITH OR WITHOUT ELASTIC

Smaller rolls of elastic have become difficult to find. Marshall Dry Goods has some choices, but in case you need an alternate solution, consider using ribbon, fabric ties, elastic hair bands, elastic cording, spandex and etc. Where there is a will, there is a way.
