NO SHORTCUTS

DAVID JACKSON | SEWING TIPS | MARCH 15, 2022

Last month’s blog was all about shortcuts. Yes - there are times where a shortcut is just the ticket - even when it comes to sewing. We looked at how things such as magnets, binder clips, clothespins, power strips and rotary cutters speed up the sewing process. BUT there are many times when a shortcut just won’t cut it.

As with anything, practice makes perfect - and practice takes time. Sometimes there just isn’t an easy fix or CliffsNotes to read. Doing the work, honing your craft, paying due diligence will pay off when a needle and thread are involved.

For your consideration, here are nine shortcuts NOT to take.

1. DON’T PLAN

Taking the time to plan before your sewing project begins can be compared to laying the foundation of a house. If it’s done right, the support is there - and the building will be square, sturdy, strong. Many successful seamstresses spend a lot of time laying out a pattern accurately and cutting it accurately. Make sure your darts are pre-trimmed and check to make sure the seams are the same length. Getting the initial steps right will provide an amazing foundation for your project. If you don’t plan, you won’t succeed.

2. SKIP THE IRONING

Every chance you get, iron. If you don’t press as you go big mistakes can happen. By ironing, your seams will lay flat as you stitch. You will also be able to have more of an idea as to how your finished project will look as you progress. It’s also a great idea to keep the ironing pad close to your sewing area. Speaking of ironing boards, a small one will do just fine if you don’t have the room for a larger one. Also, if the ironing board is in close proximity to where you’re working (not across the room), you’re going to be more inclined to use it more often.

3. GOING TOO FAST

You’ve perhaps heard the phrase, “slow your role?” Slowing the sewing process can at times be the best thing you can do. By taking your time you will have fewer errors. Many times haste will make waste. Catching and fixing mistakes as they happen - as opposed to flying through a step - will save you time and energy.

4. FLY BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS

It is very tempting to just jump in and learn to swim on your sewing projects - especially if you’re an anxious beginner. BUT - one of the best things you can do is take the time to attend a sewing class. Learning from those who are experienced is extremely beneficial! If you can attend in person, that’s always plan A. On-site training provides the give and take, question and answer environment that most online courses just don’t provide. If you can’t attend one in person, still take the time to watch online instructional videos. Yes, this takes time, but in the long run it will save you headaches and frustration.

5. MAKING IT LOOK GOOD ONLY ON THE OUTSIDE

Many sewing shortcuts involve just focusing on the outside of the garment. Any experienced seamstress will tell you that your garment should look just as good on the inside as it does on the outside. Things like unfinished seams may seem like it’s no big deal. But when you have to cut strings every time you wear it, it does become a problem. Strings can then lead to unraveling, which leads to a hole. Take the time to get it right - inside and out.

6. NO TIME FOR ALTERATIONS

One huge mistake is to wear the “finished” garment without considering alterations. Before you close the sewing kit, make sure to try it on - making sure it fits your body. Make sure it is long enough/short enough. Sometimes just one small alteration makes all the difference.

7. NO BREAKS

One of the biggest mistakes that can be made is to avoid taking breaks while you sew. This may be something as simple as standing up and stretching for a few seconds - to even going outside to walk the dog or sit in your backyard with a cup of coffee for a moment or two. Staying at your workstation too long can produce physical and mental fatigue. This can lead to mistakes and frustration. Your sewing experience will be more enjoyable if you take the time for a break every now and then.

8. FORGET THE BASICS

In addition to pre-washing your fabrics and ironing as you go, there are other elementary things you don’t need to bypass. Clip the loose threads as you sew. Read the patterns before you begin and consult them during the process. Change your sewing machine needle often, use a high-quality thread, and always remember to use sharp scissors. It’s the simple, basic things that can make all the difference!

9. SKIPPING A STEP

Sewing is a lot like building a house of cards. If you take too many shortcuts and skip just one step, everything can come tumbling down. One completed task leads you to the next. While there are some shortcuts that are beneficial, many times they are just the opposite of what should transpire. Enjoy the process one step at a time!
