CHOOSING THE RIGHT FABRIC FOR THE RIGHT SEASON
Choosing a pattern may be easy, but sometimes getting the fabric to match the season can be difficult and confusing. Some patterns and fabrics do not play well together - especially if you are trying to sew something for a particular time of year and you’re trying to use the wrong material. Although it’s currently springtime, many of our clients at Marshall Dry Goods prepare in advance and sew items that will be used or given as gifts months down the road.
Here are some basic guidelines to help you get the fabric matched to the correct season:
1. SPRING
This season can be very unpredictable - which also lends itself to a plethora of choices. Fibers such as cotton and linen do tend to be the most popular for the spring, but regardless, bright color tones are usually always the choice. While cotton is the go to in almost any season, in the spring it breathes well and will absorb perspiration. The other favorite is linen - which is a stronger fabric and is very breathable. Linen will also come closer to maintaining its shape in warmer weather.
2. SUMMER
This particular season calls for cool fabrics no doubt. Again, cotton is a good choice because it is breathable, but keep in mind that it can become heavy if there is lots of moisture involved. Rayon is perhaps a better choice, as it will keep the skin cool and is more breathable. Summertime also calls for more bright, vibrant colors - as opposed to the dark, warmer fall and winter tones.
Fabrics to avoid include nylon - which is synthetic. Another fiber that is not summer-friendly is silk. Although it is soft and smooth, silk will repel water, leaving moisture trapped between the fabric and skin. Not fun on a hot, humid day!
3. FALL
This season is similar to spring, with the exception that you will possibly be dealing with colder temps, mixed in with remnants of summer. Darker tones, using silk, cotton or wool work best. You can mix and match, layering your clothing to adjust for varying temps during the day.

4. WINTER
Fabric choices for the coldest season of the year call for wool, flannel, silk, cashmere - even cotton. Wool is perhaps the best choice, providing insulating properties that other fabrics do not. Fleece is also known for being soft and comfortable, and dries quickly. While fleece is lighter than wool, it can be very effective when layered. Speaking of layers, feel free to do so! Learn to mix and match, leaning towards insulating fibers and darker colors.
