MATCHMAKER: Pairing the Right Fabric With the Right Project

DAVID JACKSON | FABRIC | JUNE 13, 2022

When it comes to sewing, there are many things that can make or break your projects. Some of these include not cutting your fabric with the grain, forgetting to put your presser foot down before sewing, getting the right tension and stitch length set correctly on your machine, sewing your seams on the wrong side or forgetting to press the seams. While these are issues to conquer, one of the biggest mistakes we see is not using the right fabric for the project. You can have the best pattern in the world, but not using the right material can cause you to be frustrated and want to throw in the towel.

Here are some basic questions to ask that will help you select the right fabric.

  1. Does the project match my skill level?

  2. Do I understand the properties of the chosen fabric?

  3. What time of year will this be worn/used?

  4. Does it need a lining?

  5. If it is a printed fabric, will I be able to line up the print while sewing?

  6. Does the pattern require more than one type of fabric?

  7. Does the elasticity of the fabric match the pattern requirements?

  8. Do I have all of the tools required for the project?

  9. Is my sewing machine capable of executing the necessary stitches?

The next step is to understand fabric types and what season they are to be worn in. While this is not a complete breakdown, here is some basic info that will help:

  1. Cotton is always a great choice for beginners

  2. Know what fabrics stretch the best. Knits stretch better than fabrics that are woven.

  3. Spring fabric favorites include sheer fabrics, cotton, crepe and linen.

  4. Summer fabric favorites include cotton, nylon, eyelet, polyester and tropical wool.

  5. Fall favorites include plaids, cotton, crepe, knits, corduroy and wool.

  6. Winter choices include wool, tweed, fleece, leather, corduroy and fur.

Next month we will take an in-depth look at fabric types and their respective characteristics. The old saying: “Look before you leap” works well when you are beginning a new sewing project. Applying these guidelines and asking yourself these questions we’ve presented will be a huge help.
