10 FALL SWEATER TIPS

For those of us who love to sew, wearing a sweater you’ve created is icing on the cake. While there are specific techniques involved, it’s not as hard as you would think. The best place to begin is with a tight knit, bulky fabric. If the fabric doesn’t have a lot of stretch, it can be treated almost like a sweater that’s woven with seam finishes and straight stitching. 

Here are 10 tips to consider when sewing fall knit sweaters this year:

1. Stretch needles are the bomb! They will prevent puncturing the fabric, making the whole process much easier.

2. Always allow for more seam clearance. Knits are prone to unraveling, and with surplus material being allowed you will save yourself a lot of headaches!

3. While you don’t always need to press, when you do just use the tip of the iron instead of the entire face of the iron.

4. Using clear elastic where there are areas that may stretch is a must.

5. Always use a pattern weight as well as a rotary cutter when possible.

6. If you’re using a serger, use the differential feed for edges.

7. Hand wash when finished. 

8. Consider using freezer paper for a template

9. A knit picker is your best friend. This fabric tool is used to remove snags that either occur when you’re sewing a knit fabric AND is used to remove snags from clothes and other fabrics.
