Did You Know? (Part 1 of 2)

DAVID JACKSON | SEWING TIPS | SEPTEMBER 14, 2023

As with any hobby or profession, the sewing world holds many jewels to be discovered. Some things are obvious - some are not. This blog is the first of two, dealing with some of the “frequently asked questions” Marshall Dry Goods has received over the years. While some of these questions don’t offer “one and done” answers, they are likely to shed light on some things you may have never thought of - or knew the answer to.

Enjoy:

What material is one of the easiest to sew?

Quilting cotton. This material is medium weight, plus it has a fair amount of structure, perfect for patchwork, bags, accessories, quilting and more. Since quilting cotton is heavier than some fabrics, this makes sewing a breeze. Give it a try!

Is there a fabric that’s better to learn on than others?

One of our favorites is cotton broadcloth. It has a stable weave, plus it doesn’t tend to stretch, making it easier to practice stitching and construction techniques. Other options include 100% cotton, poly cotton or 100% cotton poplin - a very smooth and soft fabric, often used to make blouses and shirts.

What is one of the strongest fabrics you can use when sewing?

Spectra fiber is one of the strongest in the textile world. Did you know it is also one of the lightest materials you can use? It has shown to be stronger than steel and more durable than most any other fabric you can find.

What fabrics are considered to last the longest?

Two of the top fabrics in this category include microfiber and canvas. These are typically used in furniture applications. Cotton and linen also are extremely strong. They have to be woven very tightly to achieve their maximum strength.

What are some fabric types that shrink the least?

These fabrics won’t shrink, plus they resist water-based stains: Nylon, spandex, acrylic, polyester and acetate.

What causes fabrics to shrink?

Hot water and high dryer settings pose a risk to most all types of fabrics. Take the high road and wash vulnerable clothes in cold water. Avoid those heavy duty cycles and high heat drying options!

What is considered to be one of the most expensive fabric in the world?

Vicuna wool is extremely expensive due to the fact that it comes from the Vicuna sheep, a rare sheep species found in Peru. Another is the Guanaco, a very rare animal as well.

What are some of the hardest fabrics to clean?

Suede, silk and lace top the list. If you don’t take extra precaution when cleaning these materials, you can cause damage in the blink of an eye.

Is there a fabric that makes you look slimmer?

Denim, silk and cotton are some of the top fabrics that tend to make you look more slim than others. Color considerations and pattern prints also come into play when trying to look more slim.

What fabrics tend to make you look larger?

If you’re going for the slim look, avoid bulky fabrics such as suede, angora, mohair, taffeta, flannel and wide wale corduroy. Leather can also make you look larger if it isn’t cut to size.
