Winter Sewing Vibes

DAVID JACKSON | SEWING | NOVEMBER 15, 2023

It seems like the fall season comes and goes more quickly every year. Even if there are still a few leaves on the trees, there’s no better time than NOW to start your winter sewing projects. Each time the season changes it presents an opportunity to try something new in sewing. Maybe it’s a fabric you haven’t dared to try yet - or maybe it’s a silhouette you thought you couldn’t pull off. While we don’t believe in sewing trends as the be-all-end-all for the season’s sewing projects, Marshall Dry Goods sees this as an opportunity to experiment with some new styles and techniques that perhaps you haven’t thought about before.

WINTER BASICS

When it comes to sewing for cooler weather, here are a few basic things to consider:

  • Fabric choices for the coldest season of the year call for wool, flannel, silk, cashmere - even cotton.

  • Wool is perhaps the best choice, providing insulating properties that other fabrics do not.

  • Fleece is also known for being soft and comfortable, and dries quickly. While fleece is lighter than wool, it can be very effective when layered.

  • Layer up! Learn to mix and match, leaning towards insulating fibers and darker colors.

FLANNEL

Remember the flannel of the 90s? Just like many styles that come and go, this one has returned. We’re seeing flannel used for anything from men’s button-down shirts to full-length dresses. If you’re looking for more flannel options, check out our huge selection!

LINGERIE

What you see and what you don’t are of equal importance! Lingerie is popping up on sewing blogs and in patterns everywhere. Sewers are learning how to work with lingerie elastic as they make pajamas, slips and even bras that are customized to fit their bodies.

WINTER FLORALS

Flowers are not just for spring and summer. This winter we are seeing more and more cold-weather patterns for florals. Loving the winter floral vibe? We have lots of patterns to choose from!

BELTED OVERSIZED OUTERWEAR

Oversized outerwear is always a hit when the temps turn cold. Having a belt to cinch waists on coats and ponchos is always a win. You can also wear oversized outerwear on skirts! In reality, this style can be used in many seasons.

BOXY COATS

This coat style doesn’t have any fancy shaping, and that’s exactly the point. This makes it easier to fit, since the boxy style won’t require any tight-fitting curves that many other styles need. Plus, if you decide you don’t like the style, you can always throw a belt on over the top of it.
